Locate a map of Greece and surrounding countries Ð copy on to a blank BLM.

Outline the role of  the 12 Olympian Gods from Greek mythology

(Individual students can select a focus God).

Examine the meaning behind the colours and design of the Greek flag and the Olympic flag.

Examine how Greece Differs from Australia in area, coastline, population, mountains etc.

Devise a portfolio plan or outline for Samples of Greece for display at end of unit.

Justify the purpose or need to learn about Ancient Civilisations and the history of events such as the Olympics

Mathematical

I enjoy working with numbers & science

State the differences (in kms)  to Athens from various capital cities around the world.

Convert Greek drachma/leptos to Australian dollar/cents fill in a comparison shopping guide.

Calculate the cost of a flight to Athens Ð using a variety of airlines Ð compare deals (Trec).

Investigate the cost of a stay in Athens for 2 weeks during the Olympics. Accommodation/food etc + airfares.

Construct a timeline of the Olympic Games since the first games.

Discuss the costs involved in holding the Olympic games Ð compare Atlanta to Sydney to Athens

Visual/Spatial

I enjoy painting,  drawing & visualising

Copy a Greek artwork (enlarge by using grid paper) to create a wallpaper frieze for classroom.

Draw your selected God in various formats and mediums e.g. prints, cartoon, paint. or

Draw the Parthenon.

Make a family tree of the entire Greek Gods (for display) Ð with a Mt Olympus background.

Examine the Greek language including its history.  Learn simple phrases and make labels for class.

Design an Olympic emblem that uses aspects of Ancient Greece.

Evaluate the Parthenon in terms of architectural design (after looking at drawings and drawing same). Use LDC.

Kinaesthetic

I enjoy doing hands-on activities, sports & dance

Find the Olympic Sports which could be started at School for a 2 week competition

Express the clothing hairstyles and jewellery  of the Ancient Greeks through 2D and 3D models.

Make a 3D model of the Parthenon

(TAP).

Select a variety of Greek food suitable for cooking at school.

Perform a Greek cultural experience Ð food, information, and show piece models, artwork and dance.

Discuss and assess the Greek cultural day was it a valuable experience for all concerned.

Musical

I enjoy making & listening to music

Listen to and learn the Greek national anthem

Interpret Greek dance and songs into an Australian v Greece context.

Plan and carry out a performance of the Zorba the Greek dance.

Investigate the history/rituals or the customs of Greek dances.

Compose a rap that relates to the Greek Gods/Olympics and Greece.

Complete a review of the Greek Raps Ð selected Raps to be performed at Greek cultural day.

Interpersonal

With a partner choose one aspect of Ancient Greek life research and report back to class.

In small groups outline all sports in Summer Games (in sections e.g. swimming, gymnastics) with brief review of  rules etc of each.

With a partner complete a poster on the history of the Olympics ( posters can be displayed throughout the school).

Examine the path of the Olympic Torch bearers Ð plot the path on a world map (each student makes a mark).

Perform a Classroom tally of medals won as Olympic games progress Ð (each student has a country).

Rate the performance of each country in particular competitions given access to facilities and funds.

Carry out a SOWT analysis of the knowledge of Greece and the beginnings of the Olympics.
